Spring is here, and just like nature renews itself, it’s time to refresh your portfolio!
As the first quarter of the year wraps up, this is the perfect moment to update your model digitals—keeping your look current and making sure you’re always ready for the next big booking opportunity.
Digitals, also known as polaroids, have been a standard in the modeling industry since the early days when photographers and designers needed unedited, raw images to evaluate a model’s natural beauty and versatility. Before advanced cameras and photo editing, agencies would capture quick Polaroid shots of potential models to keep on file—this practice became an industry staple that is still required today.
Whether you’re a new model building your portfolio or a seasoned pro, updating your digitals quarterly is key. Personally, I make sure to renew mine at least four times a year—and if you’ve had any drastic changes (haircut, color change, weight fluctuation, etc.), it’s best to take fresh ones immediately.
The Power of Updated Digitals
Agencies and casting directors rely on digitals to see how you truly look in the moment. A model's appearance is their calling card, and keeping your portfolio updated ensures you always present yourself accurately. Outdated digitals can cost you opportunities!
Show your current look – If your portfolio is outdated, you risk losing jobs that require your present appearance.
Stay relevant & professional – Regularly updated digitals show you’re serious about your career.
Book gigs that match your look – Clients hire based on what they see—fresh digitals increase your chances of landing the right roles.
How to Take the Perfect Digitals
Here’s a quick guide to nailing your digitals every time:
1. Keep It Simple & Natural
- Wear minimal makeup—just enough to enhance your features.
- Keep hair out of your face, either slicked back or styled naturally.
- Good lighting is essential—natural light is best, but a well-lit space works too.
- Stick to a neutral background (white or gray is ideal).
2. Outfit Tips
- Wear something fitted and neutral—black or white tank tops, skinny jeans, or a simple bodysuit.
- Choose an outfit that suits your brand—if you're aiming for commercial gigs, go for a clean, fresh look. If you’re a high-fashion model, opt for sleek and minimalistic.
- Avoid busy patterns, logos, or distracting accessories.
3. Must-Have Poses & Angles
Agencies and clients want to see your versatility, but they also need to see the basics:
Headshot (front-facing, natural smile, no smile)
Side profile (left and right)
Full-body shot (front and back, standing naturally)
¾ shot (a little movement to show personality)
4. Keep Your Expression Relaxed & Confident
- No heavy expressions—keep it neutral, soft, or subtly confident.
- Avoid over-posing—digitals should show your natural beauty.
- If needed, practice in front of a mirror to see what feels best.
The Bottom Line: Stay Ready!
Being a model means always being prepared. Regularly updating your digitals ensures you’re constantly in the game and ready for whatever opportunity comes your way. As we step into spring, take this as your sign to refresh your portfolio, renew your digitals, and step confidently into your next big booking.
