The Modern Day Woman : a three outfit project created, photographed, and directed by Dani House

This Isn’t Your Typical Article: The Art of Model & Photographer Synergy

This isn’t your typical article. I encourage you to open your mind to an honest and genuine conversation about what art truly means to society. You may know me best as Bo, and I was born and raised in the heart of Baltimore City, Maryland, where my passion for the performing arts blossomed and grew into what is now my day-to-day life. At the age of 16, I started my professional modeling career with the goal of becoming my own kind of Supermodel. Choosing to chase my dream wasn’t as easy as it may seem. However, now as a 23-year-old Black woman who’s dedicated the past eight years to cultivating and refining my craft as a model and performer, I see the profound impact of my artistry in ways I couldn’t have imagined. Join me on this journey to unpack what the modern woman is today and, more importantly, how the relationship between a model and a photographer can create work that is transformative.

The Creative Process

Dani is the genius mind behind Bmodelinc on Instagram. Her photography is a love letter to the very being and essence of what it feels like to be a Black woman. Using natural lighting, stunningly sneaky locations, and her uniquely trained eye, she’s produced some of the most captivating moments of my career. Our partnership began in 2019, fresh out of high school, ready to build, learn, and establish myself as a freelance model.

For us, the creative process is never just about showing up and taking pictures. It’s a shared vision, a conversation between artist and muse, where we both bring pieces of ourselves to the table. Our shoot days start with the simplest yet most comforting text: “Hey Bo, I’m ready to shoot when you are.” That message signals not just the start of a session but the start of another chapter in our ever-growing artistic journey.

There’s something incredibly intimate about working with a photographer who truly sees you—not just as a subject but as a story waiting to unfold. When a model and a photographer connect beyond the surface level, the work they create together transcends the lens, the lighting, and the location. It becomes something deeper. A mirror to the past, a reflection of the present, and a vision of the future.

The Power of Collaboration: Vulnerability Meets Vision

Being vulnerable in my art has always been easy. What’s not so easy? Articulating it to the masses. The glamour, the fashion, the passion—they run strong in my veins. I feel the strength of my grandmothers and mother’s prayers carrying me forward, yet even with that foundation, I’ve had moments where my heart and mind felt disconnected from my work. How do I execute the vision just right? How do I make sure it resonates?

Pintrest Inspiration

The truth is, I’m human just like everyone else. And if I’m being completely honest, grief has enlightened me to a new level of "the show must go on." That phrase, often thrown around in entertainment, took on an entirely new meaning for me. Pushing through pain, through uncertainty, through loss, has allowed my art to reveal new meanings and messages to me each time I step in front of the camera. The work I create with Dani, and with any photographer who genuinely understands the craft, is layered with all of these experiences. And that’s what makes it powerful.

More Than Just a Photoshoot

Our shoots aren’t just about snapping pictures. They’re about storytelling, about capturing the essence of a moment that may never exist again in quite the same way. Before we even pick up the camera, we spend the first part of the day setting intentions. We go over expectations, wardrobe, styling, location, and makeup. We take our time, making sure every detail aligns with the story we’re trying to tell. Then comes the fitting, a good snack, even better conversation, and a clear vision for how we’ll move forward.

That’s the beauty of working with a photographer who gets it—who sees you not just as a model but as a collaborator, a co-creator. When that relationship is built on trust, mutual respect, and shared artistry, the results are nothing short of magic.

Why Model-Photographer Relationships Matter

If you’re a model just starting out, my biggest advice is this: find photographers who see you, who hear you, who care about bringing your vision to life as much as their own. It’s not just about booking gigs or getting portfolio shots—it’s about working with artists who elevate you, challenge you, and create with you.

In its purest form, the relationship between a model and a photographer is one of the most powerful collaborations in the creative world. It’s where some of the most moving, culture-shifting pieces of work come to life. It’s where we capture not just beauty, but truth.

So the next time you step in front of the camera, ask yourself—who’s behind it, and do they see the vision just as clearly as you do?.
